Author Interview with Iyke Michael

  1. How important is research to you when writing a book?

Is very important, as a matter of fact all good stories must be related to real life. I always do my research especially when am writing a story about a particular tribe

  1. What works best for you: Typewriters, fountain pen, dictate, computer or longhand?

Fountain pen I always prefer. It helps me to be focused on the story.

  1. When did it dawn upon you that you wanted to be a writer?

It all started from watching movies as a child, I often create my own version of the same movie in my head.

  1. What inspires you to write?

Two things, a very wild landscape and cool music

  1. How often do you write?

Always in my head, then when there is a need to write a new story, I put it down in writing.

  1. Do you have a set schedule for writing, or are you one of those who write only when they feel inspired?

I have a set schedule for writing

  1. How hard was it to sit down and actually start writing something?

It became hard when I take it serious, but when I don’t it just flow

  1. Do you aim to complete a set number of pages or words each day?

Most time, but to me I discovered it is not a good way to go because sometimes trying to reach the target anything goes

  1. Writers are often associated with loner tendencies; is there any truth to that?

Yes I think so because most of the world we create in our head have different rules that does not apply to the real world

  1. Do you think writers have a normal life like others?

It depends on what you mean by normal, since our work is mostly based on creating imaginary life, some feels like a god.

  1. Do you set a plot or prefer going wherever an idea takes you?

Setting a plot makes me in charge of the story, but most time I prefer the idea taking the lead. When I wrote “Painful Choice” I had one thing in mind, but when I decided to let the idea lead, I found myself somewhere else. And it was so natural. I think I prefer that.

  1. What, according to you, is the hardest thing about writing?

To me the hardest thing is when you decided to re-write a story you are not confident about

  1. What would you say is the easiest aspect of writing?

That would be creating the story first in your head

  1. Do you proofread and edit your work on your own or pay someone to do it for you?

No matter how good an Author might be in editing or proofread, it is always better to find another person to edit or proofread your work

  1. What is the most important thing about a book in your opinion?

I think is the message the writer is trying to pass across and how the message is being passed

  1. What is your take on the importance of a good cover and title?

The two are very important. With a good title and cover page, you are half way in making it to the bestseller

  1. Have you ever designed your own book cover?

Yes I have

  1. Do you believe a book cover plays an important role in the selling process?

I seriously do believe that

  1. Does a bad review affect your writing?

No it does not; it’s an opportunity to improve in that area

  1. Any advice you would like to give to aspiring writers?

Keep writing and don’t give up

  1. Do you read any of your own work?

A lot, and I enjoy doing so

  1. How much of yourself do you put into your books?

I tried as much as possible not to do so
